The AvMap EKP-IV belongs to the new generation of portable navigation systems for the aeronautical market. EKP features a 7" color LCD display, brilliant and sunlight-viewable, batteries sold separately.

Section I. Specifications, Features and Functions 1. Q: What is the screen size and resolution of the EKP-IV? A: The color, sunlight-viewable LCD TFT backlight screen is 7 inches diagonal, with an 800 x 480 resolution and a brightness of 400 nits.
2. Q: What does the EKP-IV offer in the way of Terrain features? A: The EKP-IV has Terrain Depiction. This will show you a topographical styled colored map with the land elevations (much like what you see on a globe), with green at the lowest elevation and dark brown at the highest elevation. Moving the cursor anywhere over the land will open a popup dialog box that will display the MSL elevation. As of software version 10.10.44R the EKP-IV also employs the TAWS terrain awareness system. TAWS (Terrain Awareness Warning System) is displayed as a color-coded (i.e. red, yellow and green) warning system that reports terrain and obstructions relative to your current altitude.
3. Q: How can I turn the Terrain Depiction off? A: In the Moving Map Menu, under TERRAINS, the option for TERRAIN DEPICTION and TAWS can be set to ON or OFF.
4. Q: Will the EKP-IV work with an autopilot? A: The EKP-IV exports NMEA data (NMEA0183) and any autopilot that can receive NMEA data will communicate with the EKP-IV. We recommend consulting with your autopilot manufacturer to verify that the device accepts NMEA0183 data. A serial cable that will connect to the serial port on your EKP-IV (which has a DB9 connector that can be connected to your autopilot) is also available.
5. Q: What other instruments can the EKP-IV interface with? A: The EKP-IV will interface with any device (external GPS, etc.) that accepts NMEA0183 data. Please consult with the manufacturer of your device to verify that the device accepts NMEA0183. Please note that RS232 devices will NOT communicate with the EKP-IV.
6. Q: Can I download software updates for the EKP-IV? A: Yes, there is an update program that enables you to download software updates from our website. You would then need to use a Compact Flash (CF) reader to transfer the update to the CFcard (you cannot use the EKP-IV as a drive) and then to your EKP-IV. 7. Q: What databases are used by the EKP-IV? A: The EKP-IV uses Jeppesen® for the aeronautical data, and TeleAtlas® for the land mapping data, as well as FAA data for private airports and obstruction information. All are contained on a proprietary AvMap Compact Flash (CF) card. A standard CF-card will not work in the EKP-IV.
8. Q: How often is the Jeppesen database updated? A: The Jeppesen data is updated on a 28-day cycle. Every 28 days, a new CF-card is available for the updated database. There are a variety of update options available (Go to www.c-map.com and visit the Club C-MAP section.
9. Q: What are the power requirements of the EKP-IV? A: The EKP-IV is rated to receive a power source between 10 and 35 volts. It comes standard with a power cord with a “cigarette-style” adapter.
10. Q: Does the EKP-IV run on battery power? A: Yes, the EKP-IV has a compartment in the back of the unit for 6 rechargeable AA batteries. It is intended for emergency use in the event your aircraft loses power. You will get up to 1.5 hours of usage on a fully charged set of batteries.
11. Q: Can I use alkaline batteries in my unit? A: We recommend NiCa rechargeable batteries. When the unit is on and connected to a power source it will charge the batteries to maintain a full charge. Using alkaline batteries may damage the unit if connected to a power source.
12. Q: Does the EKP-IV include approach data? A: The EKP-IV has Approach Waypoints, which are the initial waypoint of each approach. You can then choose any approach of your destination airport, have your flight plan route you to the initial waypoint of the selected approach, and then have a centerline to follow into the runway.
13. Q: What type of mounting options are available? A: We offer several different RAM mounts, (Dash, Yoke, Rail, Floor, Suction, Tripod). 14. Q: When I have the Terrain Depiction enabled, the EKP-IV will only fly in North-Up mode. A: The system software of the EKP-IV must be v1.07.23R or higher in order to have Terrain Depiction work in Track-Up mode.
15. Q: How do I add a new leg or modify the existing flight plan? A: Move the cursor over the flight plan line and select “Add FP Leg.” The line will become active and can then be moved to a new position. Once you have the desired new position, hit ENTER and the flight plan will be saved.
16. Q: The EKP-IV is plugged-in but won’t turn on? A: At the end of the power cable, where the 12v adapter is, you will find a small fuse. If it is blown, please replace it with one of the same amperage.
17. Q: My EKP-IV keeps resetting once I get past the startup screen. A: You need to perform a simple software procedure called “RAM Clear.” With the unit OFF, hold down the ENTER key and turn the unit on. Keep the ENTER key depressed and the SYSTEM MENU will appear. There will be a menu selection titled “RAM Clear.” Highlight this option and press ENTER. PLEASE NOTE: A RAM clear will erase any stored flight plans or waypoints. We recommend backing-up the user data BEFORE performing this procedure.
18. Q: You mention the Jeppesen database and Terrain Awareness. How does this compare to Garmin Jeppesen, obstacle and terrain databases?. A: The data that is obtained from Jeppesen is the same.
Section II. Requested Features:
1. Q: Does the EKP-IV have weather integration? A: The EKP-IV currently does not have weather integrated. It is a feature that may be added in the near future.
2. Q: Does the EKP-IV have Terrain Awareness? A: Yes, beginning 1.10.44R,the EKP-IV does have Terrain Awareness. This feature is known as TAWS (Terrain Awareness Warning System)
3. Q: Does the EKP-IV display private airstrips/airports? A: Yes, software versions beginning 1.10.44R display private airports from the FAA database
4. Q: Does the EKP-IV have approach plates? A: The EKP-IV does not include approach plates. This is another data feature enhancement in consideration for future integration.
5. Q: Does the EKP-IV display Airport diagrams with taxiway information? A: The EKP-IV does display and Airport diagram with the Runway layout, however there is currently no taxiway information.
6. Q: Does the Database include Intersections, approaches, NDBs, VORs, SIDS, STARS? A: All are available with the exception of SIDS and STARS
7. Q: Is there a "projected course line" based on present course? A: Yes, it is located in the FIX SETUP menu (from the moving map hit MENU>MENU>MENU>FIX SETUP>COURDE PREDICTOR). The course predictor can be set as OFF or can display between 1 minute and 2 hours of prediction.
8. Q: Can I make an in-flight route change directly from the moving map with the cursor, triggering the automatic recalculation of in-flight log/flight plan (no need to exit the moving map screen)? A: This can be done with the "GoTo" function button. (From the moving map hit GO TO and select CURSOR and hit ENTER).
9. Q: Are there automatic (terrain) or programmable "audible” alerts (through the headset)? A: Beginning with software version 1.11.50R audio alerts are available, however they cannot be hooked into a headset.
10. Q: Is there a built-in flash card reader/writer? A: There is no built in card reader/writer but the data card being used is a compact flash card therefore any CF card reader for a PC will read the card. At the moment there's no benefit other that upgrading the database to using the card in a CF reader (reader will not display map on the computer).
11. Q: Are the internal batteries "Hot swappable" batteries (no need to reprogram after a battery change)? A: Yes the battery is 'hot swappable”.
12. Q: Is the display of the EKP-IV sunlight viewable & what about the warning on page 2 of the manual? A: Though you will loose some clarity, the EKP-IV is as good or better in the sun as any handheld GPS system on the market. In regards to the warning, it's just warning against extreme exposure to direct sunlight over a prolonged time (when the unit is not being used, the screen should not be exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time).
13. Q: Are the same resolution and details of terrain and obstacles for all available worldwide maps? A: Terrain depiction/warning is only available for North America and Europe.
14. Q: Is the EKP-IV waterproof? A: No.
15. Q: Can I download AOPA flight plans from my PC? A: Not yet available but we're currently working on getting our unit compatible with Jeppesen's FlighStar program. Short of any major problems this may be available by May.
16. Q: Does the EKP-IV have a BlueTooth connection? A: BlueTooth is not available.
17. Q: ARE THERE ANY HARDWARE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EKP-IV AND EKP-IV PRO? A: No, they are strictly software differences.
18. Q: COULD I ADD SATELLITE WEATHER FROM A DIFFERENT PROVIDER? A: Satellite weather is not currently available for the EKP-IV.
19. Q: Do Databases Exist For Other Parts Of The World, And How Do I Get Them? A: World databases including Europe, Russia, Africa, South Asia and Australia can be obtained from AvMap’s Italian website www.avmap.it.
Section III. WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE TO...
1. Q: Update the worldwide database? A: The Jeppesen based database for North/South America can be updated either by calling our office for a new card or via email if you have a CF card reader on your PC. All other databases will need to be updated by calling our office to get a new card sent.
2. Q: You have "full flight planning capability", but are you able to keep flight logs. (Note: We have 3 partners on a PA28-180, being able to track separate logs would be an asset) A: The unit will show a track of where the plane has been flown on the map screen and will show the BRG. and distance from point to point in the flight plan page
3. Q: Does you software have full E6B computing functions and weight and balance? A: The only calculations the unit will do are wind calculations and fuel consumption
4. Q: How Do I Save My Flight Plans And Waypoints When Upgrading My Database? A: To save waypoints and flight plans when upgrading the database, you will need to save the points to the Card: Menu > Menu > Database > Enter> Menu > Initialize > Enter > Zoom-In > Enter > Select Type > Enter (Repeat Zoom-In To Save Additional Information If Needed). This information is stored in the “userimg.bin” file located on the CF-Card. If you are upgrading your database with a new CF-Card, simply copy the “userimg.bin” file from the original card to your computer hard drive. Insert the new Card into the card reader and delete the “userimg.bin” file located on that Card, replace it with the “userimg.bin” file you saved to your computer.
5. Q: When Using The Cursor On Another Part Of The Map, Can I Quickly Return To My Fix Position? A: With the Terrain or TAWS function ON, Land Elevation under the cursor will be reported at the top of the Moving Map when the cursor is stopped. Hitting the CLEAR key once will remove the Land Elevation, and hitting CLEAR again will return the screen to the fix. With Terrain turned OFF, hitting CLEAR once will return the screen to the fix position. NOTE: WHEN THE AUTO POSITION MODE IS SET TO AUTO HOME, THE SCREEN WILL AUTOMATICALLY RETURN TO THE FIX POSITION WHEN LEFT IDLE FOR 60 SECONDS.
